Le congiunzioni

    Le congiunzioni collegano tra loro due elementi simili di una frase, oppure più frasi tra loro. Clicca sul bottone per ripassare i .
    Le congiunzioni si possono distinguere in:

    congiunzioni consistenti di una sola parola [vs. vocabolo], come: and, or, but, because, if, that ;

    congiunzioni composte o locuzioni congiuntive, formate da più parole, come: as long as, as well as, the next time (that), in order that, so that.

    Per quanto riguarda la loro funzione, si possono distinguere in:

    coordinative o correlative, che collegano tra loro parti del discorso (sostantivi, aggettivi, verbi, pronomi, avverbi) o intere frasi, come:

    I’ll have bread and butter.

    Prenderò pane e burro.

    That cake is nice and big.

    Quella torta è bella grossa.

    Go and see him.

    Vai a trovarlo.

    You or I.

    Tu o io.

    Neither here nor there.

    Né qui né là.

    He arrived early and then waited at the station.

    Arrivò presto e poi attese alla stazione.

    subordinative o subordinanti, che creano un rapporto di dipendenza tra due proposizioni, cioè introducono proposizioni subordinate, come:

    I’d come if I could.

    Verrei se potessi.

    We know that he likes you.

    Sappiamo che tu gli piaci.

    Come as soon as you can.

    Vieni non appena potrai.

    They were so nasty that nobody could stand them.

    Erano così antipatici che nessuno li poteva sopportare.

    Caratteristiche di alcune congiunzioni coordinative e correlative (per le subordinanti vedi )

    Iniziamo col considerare queste tre comunissime congiunzioni coordinative: and “e”, or “o”, but “ma”.

    Nel caso in cui mettano in correlazione due frasi:

    a) se il soggetto delle due frasi è lo stesso, esso non viene quasi mai ripetuto;

    John went in and switched the lights on.

    John entrò e accese le luci.

    We heard them speak but [we] didn’t recognise them at once.

    Li sentimmo parlare ma non li riconoscemmo subito.

    She reads or writes letters every afternoon.

    Legge o scrive lettere ogni pomeriggio.

    We saw them at the airport and had a long chat with them.

    Li abbiamo visti all’aeroporto e abbiamo fatto una lunga chiacchierata con loro.

    He went to bed late and nevertheless could not fall asleep.

    Andò a letto tardi e tuttavia non riuscì ad addormentarsi.

    b) and e or si trovano in molte espressioni idiomatiche d’uso comune:

    in and out

    dentro e fuori

    here and there

    qui e là

    take or leave

    prendere o lasciare

    by hook or by crook

    per amore o per forza

    c) and tende ad essere usata per correlare due forme verbali invece di mettere la seconda all’infinito (soprattutto all’imperativo, al presente, al futuro e al passato o con alcuni verbi modali, anche se si possono trovare esempi con altre forme verbali);

    Come and fetch us at five.

    Vieni a prenderci alle cinque.

    He comes and plays cards with us almost every night.

    Viene a giocare a carte con noi quasi tutte le sere.

    I’ll try and come next week.

    Cercherò di venire la prossima settimana.

    You can come and stay with us as long as you like.

    Puoi venire a stare con noi quanto vorrai.

    It’s very sweet of you to come and see me.

    È molto carino da parte tua d’essere venuta a trovarmi.

    He came and talked to us last night.

    Venne a parlarci ieri sera.

    He’d come and stay with us if you asked him.

    Verrebbe a stare con noi se tu glielo chiedessi.

    d) and si trova sovente come correlativo con alcuni aggettivi come: nice e lovely, seguiti da un altro aggettivo, o con good seguito da un avverbio;

    It was nice and warm in there.

    Era piacevolmente caldo là dentro.

    It’s lovely and cool in here.

    È bel fresco qua dentro.

    He hit them good and hard.

    Li colpì ben forte.

    It’s nice and tasty.

    Ha un buon sapore.

    e) and talvolta congiunge due comparativi (di aggettivi o di avverbi), due o più avverbi, verbi o sostantivi, esprimendo così l’idea di continuità o di ripetizione.

    There were cats and cats and cats everywhere.

    C’era una quantità di gatti dovunque.

    She talked on and on and on.

    Continuò a parlare all’infinito.

    They walked faster and faster.

    Camminarono sempre più in fretta.

    They talked more and more carefully.

    Parlarono con cautela sempre maggiore.

    They wrote and wrote till they were exhausted.

    Continuarono a scrivere fino a essere sfiniti.

    Consideriamo ora queste congiunzioni correlative:

    both… and…

    sia... sia...

    neither… nor…

    né... né...

    either… or…

    o... o...

    not only… but also…

    non solo… ma anche…

    Esempi:

    Both my friend and I have been to Britain.

    Sia la mia amica che io siamo stati in Gran Bretagna.

    Neither she nor he has arrived yet.

    Non sono ancora arrivati né lui né lei.

    Either you come at once or you won’t find anything left.

    O vieni subito o troverai che non è rimasto nulla.

    Not only Mary but also her sister came, unfortunately.

    Non è venuta solo Maria, ma anche sua sorella, purtroppo.
