BESIDE, BESIDES

Beside è sempre preposizione:

She was sitting beside her friend.	Era seduta a fianco della sua amica.
Who’s the man you were working beside?	Chi è l’uomo accanto ai quale lavoravi?
They were beside themselves with anger.	Erano fuor di sé dalla rabbia.
What you said was beside the point.	Quello che hai detto non c’entrava affatto.

Come si vede, beside può significare “accanto” (by the side of “al fianco di”) ma anche “al di fuori”.

Besides può essere preposizione (“oltre”) o congiunzione (“inoltre”):

Who was informed, besides the principal?	Chi è stato informato, oltre al preside?
I’m too tired to go to the cinema; besides, I’ve already seen that film.	Sono troppo stanco per andare al cinema; inoltre ho già visto quel film.
