Oltre alle forme elencate sopra si osservino queste altre forme (in particolare si osservi l’uso di and dopo hundred e thousand):

twenty-two, twenty-three, ..., twenty-nine (e così per le altre decine);

one hundred and ten, one hundred and ninety-nine;

one thousand and one, one thousand and ten, one thousand one hundred, one thousand one hundred and one;

two hundred, three thousand, four million;

twenty-second (22nd), twenty-third (23rd), twenty-fourth (24th), .... twenty-ninth (29th) (e così per le altre decine).

In italiano e in inglese viene fatto un diverso uso del punto e della virgola con i numerali:

italiano:	1.000.000	10,54
inglese:	1,000,000 (one million)	10.54 (ten point five four)

Quando un numero non esprime una quantità ma identifica o contrassegna un oggetto, in inglese viene pronunciato cifra per cifra:

The invoice number is 6609. (double six- 0 - nine)

Il numero della fattura è 6609.

Si noti:

- Due cifre uguali (soprattutto se sono in posizione iniziale o finale) sono espresse mediante double (doppio): sei-sei double six;

- Lo zero è scritto e pronunciato come la lettera O maiuscola o minuscola; si usa a volte la grafia oh.

Queste norme si applicano soprattutto nel dire i numeri di telefono.

ZERO

La cifra zero ha in inglese varie realizzazioni:

1. nought (soprattutto in inglese britannico) in aritmetica:

To multiply by ten, just add a nought to the number.

Per moltiplicare per dieci, basta aggiungere uno zero al numero.

.02 (point nought two). 0,02.

2. zero nelle scale graduate, in connessione con termini statistici e scientifici e nelle espressioni in cui significa "punto di partenza"; in inglese americano zero è usato spesso invece di nought, oh, o nil:

The temperature went below zero.	La temperatura scese sotto lo zero.
There has been a zero growth in the population of this area.	C’è stata una "crescita zero" della popolazione di questa regione.
The general fixed the zero hour for 2 a.m.	Il generale stabilì l’ora zero per le due antimeridiane.
Tampa 4 - Detroit zero.	Tampa 4 - Detroit 0 (nel baseball).

3. Nil nei punteggi sportivi (soprattutto in inglese britannico):

Chelsea 1 - Arsenal nil.

Chelsea-Arsenal uno a zero.

Nel tennis però si usa love:

Borg was leading 15-love.	Borg conduceva per quindici a zero.
It was a love game for Ashe.	Ashe perdette il game a zero.

4. O (la vocale "o", a volte trascritta come oh) nel dire le cifre una per volta — dettando un numero di telefono, di un documento, una sigla, ecc.

Flight AZ 309 — Flight A zed three oh nine. Il volo AZ309.

Uso di a e one

Entrambi corrispondono all’italiano "uno", ma sovente svolgono funzioni diverse, con differenti sfumature di significato:

a articolo indefinito, uno qualsiasi

I saw a man near the gate. Ho visto un uomo vicino al cancello.

one quantità numerica; pronome; usato in correlazione con other / another; usato in certe espressioni idiomatiche di tempo

There was only one man near the gate.	C’era un solo uomo vicino al cancello.
One and a half days were necessary to get there.	Per arrivarci fu necessario un giorno e mezzo.
The two boys, one a Pole, were awarded medals.	Ai due ragazzi, uno dei quali era un Polacco, furono assegnate medaglie.
Give me one, not two.	Dammene uno, non due.
One difficulty arose after another.	Sorse una difficoltà dopo l’altra.
One brother’s tall, the other’s short.	Un fratello è alto, l’altro è piccolo.
One day he’ll come back again.	Un giorno ritornerà di nuovo.
Most of the people present weren’t interested, but one man was.	La maggior parte della gente presente non era interessata, ma un uomo lo era.

Come dire le frazioni

Si osservi come si esprimono le frazioni: one half 1/2, one third 1/3, two fifths 2/5, three-quarters o three-fourths 3/4.

Esempi:

She did it in one-third (of) the time it took us.	Lo fece in un terzo del tempo che occorse a noi.
An ounce is one sixteenth of a pound.	Un’oncia è un sedicesimo di libbra.
He attended four fifths of the lessons	Fu presente a quattro quinti delle lezioni

In quest’ultimo esempio, nella lingua colloquiale si preferisce:

He attended four lessons out of five.

Partecipò a quattro lezioni su cinque.

Nelle espressioni con half si trova solitamente l’articolo a /an:

He stayed there one day and a half.	Rimase là un giorno e mezzo.
Stop here half an hour.	Fermati qui mezz’ora.
