Nomi collettivi

Sono i sostantivi che si comportano come singolari se viene sottolineata l’idea di unità, o come plurali quando si considerano i vari componenti di un gruppo.

Esempi:

The committee suggests that the proposal should be voted.	Il comitato (unanimemente) suggerisce che si dovrebbe votare la proposta.
The committee disagree on this matter.	Il comitato (non tutti i suoi membri) non è d’accordo su questa questione.
The United States is a large country.	Gli Stati Uniti sono un grande paese.
The class was really too large for one teacher.	La classe era veramente troppo numerosa per un solo insegnante.
The class were exchanging papers among themselves.	La classe stava scambiandosi i fogli.
The jury were unable to reach a verdict, because some of them were convinced that she was innocent.	La giuria non fu in grado di raggiungere un verdetto, perché alcuni de suoi componenti erano convinti che fosse innocente.
