a) Nell’esprimere una forma di superlativo relativo si possono
avere due alternative:
the
more... / the … -er
|
se il confronto è
fra due
|
the
most... / the… -est
|
se il confronto è
fra più di due
|
He is certainly the
worst (of the three).
|
È certamente il
peggiore (dei tre).
|
She is the
elder of the two children.
|
È la maggiore
dei due figli.
|
She

eldest of the sisters.
|
È la maggiore
delle sorelle (almeno tre).
|
They
both are intelligent, but he is the
more active.
|
Sono entrambi
intelligenti, ma lui è il più attivo (dei due).
|
I correlativi the former …
the latter si usano per
fare riferimento rispettivamente al primo e al secondo di due
elementi nominati in precedenza:
Their
children are called Sheila and Harley -
the former is still at
school while the
latter is at college.
|
I loro figli si
chiamano Sheila e Harley: la prima è ancora a scuola mentre
il secondo è all’università.
|
b) Queste forme di comparativi ripetuti corrispondono all’italiano
"sempre più", "sempre meno":
It’s
getting colder
and colder.
|
Si sta facendo sempre
più freddo.
|
Fewer
and fewer people are
coming to see the exhibition.
|

vengono a vedere la mostra.
|
They
are becoming more
and more boring.
|

sempre più noiosi.
|
He
was driving slower
and slower.
|
Stava guidando sempre
più lentamente.
|
They
grew angrier
and angrier.
|
Si arrabbiarono sempre
di più.
|
Nell’ultimo esempio si potrebbe trovare anche, soprattutto
nell’uso parlato:
They grew more
and more angry.
|
c) Ecco ora una particolare struttura in cui due forme di comparativi
coordinano due frasi:
The
more I read, the
more interested I get in
the subject.
|
Più leggo, più
mi interessa l’argomento.
|
The
more we are, the
better it will be.
|
Più siamo,
meglio sarà.
|
The
harder we try, the
easier it will be to solve
the problem.
|
Più tenteremo,
più facile sarà risolvere il problema.
|
d) In questi altri esempi, I comparativi congiungono forme verbali:
I’d
rather
go
than
stay
here.
|
Preferirei andarmene
che restare qui.
|
You’d
better
phone
him than
write
to him — it’ll take less time.
|
Faresti meglio a
telefonargli piuttosto che scrivergli: ci vorrà meno tempo.
|
e) Infine ci sono forme di comparazione in cui to
introduce il secondo termine di paragone:
superior to
inferior to
equal to
to prefer
.. to
That
dictionary is superior
to this one.
|
Quel dizionario è
superiore a quest’altro.
|

new chef’s inferior
to our expectations.
|
